Consumers Energy: New Owner of Midland Transportation Site
Consumers
Energy Cooperative of Marshalltown, Iowa is the new owner of the
Midland Transportation site located at the intersection of Highways
30 & 330, West of Marshalltown. "I am excited for the Cooperative
and our members. Consumers Energy was able to purchase a site that
allows us to serve our members and customers from a centralized
location in our market area. Additionally, we were able to obtain
25 acres of land that we believe creates an opportunity for commercial
development at some point in the future. It is just a great location
for the coop and our members," said Brian Heithoff, CEO/General
Manager.
The new site of Consumers Energy will be more centrally located
in relation to the entire membership, which will enable the Cooperative
to provide better service and be more accessible to a greater part
of its membership. The new site also places the Cooperative in closer
proximity to the portion of its market area experiencing the most
growth West and Southwest of Marshalltown. "Since serving
our members and customers is the focus of all we do, it only makes
sense to become as centrally located as possible," said Heitfhoff.
Although
Consumers Energy had just begun to discuss its long-term facilities
plan, the committee's desire was to move somewhere around the Midland
Transportation area due to its central location in its market area.
Then news traveled about the auction of the Midland site. "Our
plans just moved along a little faster than we had originally thought.
We knew it was a great opportunity for our membership especially
when we looked at the numbers. Although the building is not exactly
how we would have built it if constructing a new facility, from
a financial aspect Consumers Energy has a lot less capital invested,"
said Heithoff.
Consumers Energy has plans to remodel the old Midland Transportation
site. Prior to any remodeling, the building will need to be cleaned
out due to items left behind by the Midland company. Once details
for the remodeling effort become finalized, a local contractor will
begin to remodel the new Consumers Energy site. While no definite
plans have been made, it is currently the intent of the Cooperative
to sell its site on Center Street and relocate to its new building
sometime within the next year. Plans have been made to incorporate
several energy efficiency measures to the new Consumers Energy site
such as updates to the lighting systems and better insulation, demonstrating
the Cooperatives commitment to energy efficiency and energy management.
Consumers Energy is a local, member-owned energy delivery and energy
management cooperative serving its members since 1938. The Cooperative
is located on South Center Street in Marshalltown, Iowa and has
an outpost located in Nevada, Iowa that services the western portion
of its service territory. Today, Consumers Energy serves over 4900
members in Marshall, Tama, Story, Jasper, and Polk counties.
