Electric Delivery Service
Power Supply: Where We Buy Our Power!
Consumers Energy buys 100% of the electricity it sells at retail
from Central Iowa Power Cooperative (CIPCO). Incidentially, Consumers
Energy is part owner of, and has a Directorship on CIPCO's Board
of Directors.
Major sources of electric energy include the following power stations
owned and/or operated by CIPCO:
20% of Duane Arnold Energy Center — Palo, IA — Nuclear
11½% of Council Bluffs Unit No. 3 — Council Bluffs, IA — Coal
100% of Fair Station — Montpelier, IA — Coal
4.6% of Louisa Station — Muscatine, IA — Coal
100% of Summit Lake Generating Station — Creston, IA — Oil/Gas
100% of Diesel Plants — Varous Locations — Oil
Nuclear and coal fired units provide the bulk of electric energy.
They are the most economical fuels. The Summit Lake plant is used
for peaking and in emergencies, due to the high cost of oil. CIPCO
owns and/or operates approximately 2,100 miles of transmission lines,
interconnected with some 40 electric utilities which make up the
Mid-Continent Area Power Pool (MAPP) in the Upper Midwest.
