Natural Gas Delivery Service

Call Before You Dig

IOWA ONE CALL

Worker marking natural gas lines in yard

Before you break out any power equipment or shovels, Consumers Energy wants to remind you of the four simple steps to safe digging.

  1. Call Iowa One Call at 1-800-292-8989. It's fast. It's free. It's the law.
  2. Wait until the flags are raised. Allow at least two business days for Consumers Energy and all other utilities to mark the lines on your property.
  3. Respect the flags. Be aware of all underground utility line locations, even if you're not working near them.
  4. Expose utility lines by hand-digging. Before using any power equipment, carefully hand dig where the utility lines are marked to expose them. If you are unable to locate the utility lines, please contact Iowa One Call and wait for assistance from the utility company.

Underground Pipelines and Service Lines

Consumers Energy has a network of underground pipelines that carry natural gas from production and storage facilities to homes and businesses throughout Ankeny, IA, and in Jasper and Marshall Counties in Iowa. These pipelines are buried and out of sight, so it's easy to forget about them.

To tell if a pipeline is present, look for Consumers Energy's above ground markers. These markers indicate approximate, but not exact, location of pipelines.

There are also natural gas service lines buried on private property which supply gas to homes and businesses. The use of sharp tools can damage the lines, causing injury or loss of service.
