Carbon Monoxide (CO) Prevention
Carbon Monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas that robs the body
of oxygen needed to survive. Burning any fuel without proper combustion
can produce carbon monoxide. Fuels such as coal, gasoline, kerosene,
oil, wood, propane and natural gas are all sources.
To protect yourself and your family from the dangers of CO, you
should: - Have all fuel-burning appliances checked annually by a licensed professional for proper operation and ventilation.
- Clean all chimneys, flues and vents yearly.
- Avoid using a wood-burning fireplace and furnace simultaneously for long periods of time, to prevent backdrafting.
- Never use a gas range for space-heating.
- Never operate vehicles, lawn mowers or grills in a closed garage.
- Use a CO detector to detect the presence of CO.
